How Do Attorneys Bill for Services?

The most common method of billing is hourly, but some lawyers use a subscription services model and others bill by the project or case.

Retainer Fee

Lawyers will generally begin with a retainer fee covering the first work hour. It is a lump sum of money that the client pays in advance, which the lawyer then uses to cover their time and expenses as they work on the case. When the retainer runs out, the client will need to replenish it if they want the lawyer to continue working.

Most retainers are not refundable, even if the lawyer doesn’t end up spending all of the money. That’s because retainers are intended to cover the lawyer’s expected costs and time commitment, even if the amount needed is less.

McLario does require a retainer fee for certain criminal defense cases which would be explained upfront. Call us to find out if your case requires a retainer fee. We will work with you to ensure you get the defense you need.

Flat Fee

Some lawyers charge a flat fee for certain services, such as routine estate planning or simple business formation. In those cases, the lawyer may not need to track their time and can provide the service for a set price.

McLario applies a flat amount for cases like traffic tickets and estate planning documents (per document).

Legal Subscription Services

A subscription service with a law firm build lasting and on-going legal relationships between a lawyer and its clients. Popular among small businesses, a legal service plan can be created for a reoccurring, flat monthly fee to cover legal advice, review documents and planning.

Pay After Recovery

Lawyers will generally begin with a retainer fee. They may also ask for a percentage of any recovery or settlement amount, which they can negotiate with the client.

How Much is a Lawyer Per Hour?

Hourly rates for lawyers vary depending on the type of law they practice, their experience, and the location of their practice. Generally, rates range from $100 to $600 per hour.

McLario typically charges hourly payment for other general legal services which are billed monthly but for most matters provides a free no obligation initial consultation where all the expected cost and steps to resolve your matter are explained. Call today to find out how we can help you.
